Sometimes, all it takes is a glance to know something needs to be done. This was the case in Subukia, a small town in Kenya where the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family run a school. Everyday life there unfolds at a peaceful pace—children learn, play, and—like everywhere else—they need a hot meal.
Not long ago, preparing dinner there looked completely different. A wooden structure, a bit like a shed built from whatever was on hand, was badly damaged by time – old and worn. And inside, the cooks rose to the challenge every day and coped as best they could, despite the lack of proper space and equipment. The conditions truly demanded a change, and not just cosmetic ones, but substantial and lasting ones.
That's why we decided to act.
Today we can show you the new kitchen – spacious, safe, and well-equipped. One where cooking is easier, more peaceful, and definitely more dignified. The sisters and staff are full of gratitude. The cooks are happy because it's a completely different work environment. They can finally cook with a smile – in good conditions and with access to everything they need. And the children? Their joy says it all. You can see it in the video below – it shows before and after photos: from the old kitchen to the moments when the children eat lunch before school. And they are truly happy. Their full plates and wide smiles are the most beautiful thank you for us. It's also the best proof of how necessary this change was.
Most importantly, this change will be a long-term impact at Subukia – in the daily meals, the children's smiles, and the calmer workdays of the women who prepare them. We're thrilled to have been a part of this transformation. And we're moving forward!
