Yesterday in Karczew was just how we like it – creative, joyful, and energetic. Fifteen children, ages 7-12, gathered to learn sewing and crocheting together. And while some had already tried it, the curiosity and desire to create something of their own were palpable from the start.
The workshops were led by Ania – a warm, patient person who makes even the first time I held a needle or crochet hook feel effortless and enjoyable. She immediately connected with the children, offering support where needed, while also giving them space to be independent.
The first part of the class was sewing. Fabrics in various colors and patterns appeared on the tables, and from them, pillows appeared. Smaller, larger, square, oblong, even shaped like dog bones. Some sewed more than one – because once you see you can do it, it's hard to stop.
Then, crocheting. Laughter mingled with calm concentration – just as happens when making something truly engaging. Everyone did their own thing, and the ideas were endless. Beautiful little decorations were created, which the children came up with on the fly. With each successive row, their movements became more confident, and their satisfaction grew.
There was also time for rest – fruit, sweet snacks, and at lunchtime – pizza. After the break, the children decided for themselves whether to return to sewing or stick with crochet. They chose what they felt most comfortable with. They enjoyed it so much that by the end, they weren't even too eager to go home.
It was a day that showed how handicraft can teach patience and focus, but also bring immense joy and the feeling of "I can do it, I'm capable of it, I did it myself." It's a pleasure to create something with your own hands, and perhaps that's why it was so hard for everyone to tear themselves away from the tables.
